Where are you with your assignment?

Please outline how far you are with your assignment so far.

For example you might answer the following questions:

These are only examples and you can say what you like as long as you give an update.

P. S. You might also refer back to previous messages on the blog.

Website Topic
The website will provide the user with details and reviews of the lastest movies showing at cinemas nationally. Pages include Top 5 movies chart, reviews, previews, and upcoming release dates.

Target Audience
I have identified three target audiences.

Average User
These would require a website that provides a professional look with easy to read text, easy to use navigation.

Younger Users
This design of the website would be aimed at young teenagers/children. The design would feature slighter bigger text than that of the average user. The website would need to be more colourful, and the text more fun than the standard styles. The buttons on this design will include rollover effects.

Partially slighted users
These users would require a big font size to allow easy reading. Any pictures of movies would appear any the bottom to allow more room for the text. Navigation well be presented as a vertical menubar (opposed to horizontal used in other designs) to again allow room for the text.

Technologies
At present, I am more comfortable in using XML with CSS therefore i feel this would be wise to use for my assignment. If i am feeling brave i may try to include XSLT but i need to practise a bit first, me thinks.

Current Progrss

So far I have done the following....

- Identified audience
- Storyboards

I am now testing the chosen technologies to test suitability

I am doing reasonably okay with the assignment. I have decided on several aspects of the assignment which I shall explain below.

Target Audiences

The three target audiences that I have identified are based on age; 7-14 year olds, 15-22 year olds, and 23 & older ages. This would mean that I have to change various aspects of the design in order to suit the respective audience - for example, font size, font type and pictures to name but a few.

Website Topic

I have decided to design the website focusing on computer games - it will provide details of the latest games/consoles etc. I chose this topic because I enjoy it but also because I think that each of the target audiences would maintain an interest in the content.

Website Technologies

Firstly, I shall be using Macromedia Dreamweaver to create the webpages, mainly because I have a large amount of experience with it beforehand and it handles everything I want to use efficiently. In terms of language I shall be using CSS with XML because I feel that I have a reasonable knowledge of it - any other langauge would be a bit silly to try and implement as at the moment I feel I need to stick with what I know.

Design

In terms of design, I have implemented some storyboards - rough admittedly, but they are only ideas.

matthew evans

i have produced a set of story boards and have started to build some of the website.

the website will be about football for fans.

i will use XML to store data of league results, as XML is designed to store and transfer data.

CSS will be used to style all the web pages.

the three users will be:
general user
printing user
visually impaired user

the printing style sheet will allow a user to print friendly verions of the data on the website.

the visually imapaired user will have larger buttons and text to help teh user read. A constrasting background will be included to make the text and navigation stand out.

Website topic
My website is going to be based on swimming. It will be based around the techniques needed for the 4 basic strokes to pass the ASA children’s swimming award levels.

Target Users
Child (swimmer)
Adult (parent)
Printer friendly (would be useful for teachers to take to the pool)

Technologies
CSS - XHTML
XML (page with criteria to pass award - table?)

I am not 100% sure about how I am going to incorporate the different technologies. I would like my example of strokes pictures to change depending on the user (adult/child) and not appear at all in the printing page. I am going to have a look at how it is possible to make this happen.

Topic
I intend to produce a factual website about Usui Reiki.

Target Audiences:
Reiki is Japanese and has it’s origins in Buddhism, therefore a traditional design appealing to a spiritual audience.
Reiki is very fashionable among city workers as a stress management technique; as such a contemporary design would be appropriate for this audience.
The web site will be mostly factual, so a print design for the audience would do not like to read on screen.

Tasks Complete
I have the bare data up on linking pages ready to be styled. I hadn’t planned to do formal storyboards, however have first draft designs done.

Technologies
I am confidence to use XHTML, XML and CSS for the whole project. I propose to do some further reading and practice with XSLT before I make any commitment as to whether I will incorporate this technology.
